The Changing Fases Of Jake Emlyn
Hey Guys. Incase you didnt know, I didnt just appear one day with a bamboozling mixture of styles and influences. I have lived a life up until now in which I have experienced different things which have lead me to express myself in different ways.
People who dont know me can sometimes be a bit confused about the music I make because they dont know where to put me. (which I like). But I would like explain my background a bit anyway to help you understand where I have "come from" and where I am "coming from"!
Below is a brief documentation of my change in styles and journey through life from around 2005, aged 16 to the present day. My life in pictures I guess lol.
2005 - At college. Im probably thinking I must take this hat back to the shop before the receipt runs out. Also I do NOT look like Brian Harvey, could everyone please stop saying that!
I had begun rapping by this time and went by the name of "Silent". I had just released my first mix tape "The Silence Is
Deafening" which shifted 1000 copies . My catchphrase was "Its Silent".
2005 - Slightly different expression here. Same hat angle.
A little bit of camp creeping in there maybe??... Not sure.
2006 - In a restaurant.
I felt like I always had to wear a hat but also I wanted to show my hair so this was the answer.2006 - This is not Dappy.2006 - Had a fight with a razor and then did a coke advert it seems.
I remember starting off with the general one slit in the eye brow at the barbers but then i couldn't stop and the situation escalated!!
Around this time I dropped my second and final mix tape as "Silent" entitled "Im Sick".2006 - Me smiling.
I was part of a rap collective called "Quality Control. We released an album called "Q.C" which attracted some interest in the uk Hip Hop scene at the time and received radio play on various mainstream and underground stations. We appeared on Channel U's spit T.V hosted by radio 1EXTRA DJ Ras Kwame, did some 1EXTRA DJ shows with Ace &Vis, Elliotness and Semtex. We also performed at Londons Cargo and UK Takeover.
This pic was taken of me backstage at UK Takeover with Loudmouth Melvin, Locksmyth, Chris Da Mentalist, Smasher and Dj Venom. Some time in 2007 I became conflicted and frustrated with with my rap. I had always been into different kinds of music and had started to sing and write songs on the piano at this point. I did not spit a bar for 3 years!
In 2008 while studying at The Brit Academy Of New Music, I formed a pop/indie band with my friend Marc J Webb aka The Kid Genius. We were called Scuffed Up Shoes!
2009 - Performing in Scuffed Up Shoes at the ATOM Awards. We also performed at the "In The City" festival in Manchester, ATOM Live at Birmingham NEC as well as other various London venues.
I got well into these old lady glasses and whore them all the time, performing extra theatrically camp at every opportunity. An extreme opposite of my "Silent" days. I also look like I could be in the Bee Gees!
We made a CD and some T shirts which we gave out everywhere we went for a while, however the band split up and I now have boxes of them piled up in my shed. Gosh
I did the artwork myself on Microsoft paint. :)
2011 - "Jake Emlyn" began.I had come round full circle at this point and decided to embrace all of the styles I had endeavored in over the years. I decided on the name "Jake Emlyn" (which is my name) and went gigging on my own around London with a keyboard and a laptop experimenting with my sound, performing a mixture of stripped down ballads and new rap songs.I did my first photo shoot as "Jake Emlyn" with Chris Lopez and began to assumed a stage persona somewhere in between the hard rapper from my mid teens and the extravagant deviant from my Scuffed Up Shoes days.
People began to call me the "Cockney Willy Wonka"!
I felt limited sat behind a piano after a while and wanted my songs to be presented how I imagined them.
In late 2011 I auditioned a 3 piece band! My drummer is Simon Fawcett, my bassist Dylan Karamazov and on guitar we have Kenji Suzuki. Im pleased to know them, they have made my imaginings real! Our set has become a show which we have called "The World Of Jake Emlyn".
We have just supported "Lucy Rose" at a sold out Jazz Cafe in Camden and we are looking forward to touring more later this year!
Its interesting to me when i look back on my life so far. It seems I have changed.
I think I like change and extremes.
It doesn't seem weird to me because I was there. Its funny and interesting to me.
Im bored of my current look now by the way so who knows what ill be like soon?!
Where can i go?Too much?
lol
